Sure! The Institute for Integrative Nutrition is the largest nutrition school in the world. IIN also has the leading Health Coach training program in the world, with 47,000 students and graduates spread across all 50 states and 100 different countries.
During my training, I studied over 100 dietary theories, practical lifestyle management techniques, and innovative coaching methods with some of the world's top health and wellness experts. My teachers included Dr. Andrew Weil, Director of the Program in Integrative Medicine (at the University of Arizona); Dr. Deepak Chopra, leader in the field of mind-body medicine; Dr. David Katz, Director of Yale University's Prevention Research Center; Dr. Walter Willett, Chair of Nutrition at Harvard University; Geneen Roth, bestselling author and expert on emotional eating; and many other researchers and nutrition authorities.

I personally travelled the health continuum from active, enthusiastic, three-sport high school athlete to overweight adult with serious health issues and back. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) I was smacked by the reality stick of autoimmune diseases (Hashimoto's hypothyroid and Meniere's disease - and I learned that if you have one autoimmune disease, you're way more likely to get more) and then the Big C in the form of breast cancer.
Those diseases were enough to motivate me to pursue changes.
But it was the everyday issues that really got me over the hump and ready to integrate the long-term changes that make such a difference. Basically, I finally got sick and tired of being sick and tired. I had (literally) a gut full of it! I was tired of looking into my closet and not being able to wear half of the things I owned because I was too fat - either my belly “muffin top” would hang over my pants or I'd have that lovely gap in my blouses or both. Even if I found some jeans to wear for the day that felt ok, by after lunch, they'd start feeling tight and miserable and I'd have to at least loosen my belt if not unbutton my jeans. Then of course, I'd have to either untuck my shirt to cover up my makeshift pants situation or do that kind of fluffing over tactic. You know the one I'm talking about where you pull out most of your tucked in shirt so that it covers your bulging belly while still technically being tucked in.
One day, I was just over it. If you’re reading this website, you’re probably getting there too. I knew I wasn't doing the right things to help me get fit and healthy but on the other hand I thought I was. I mean, I would read stories in the paper or online that would say do this and don't do this. The problem was they were too general and many times I would find a story that said the exact opposite. My head was spinning and there were too many paths to take and choices to make. Where do I start?! Damn!
That's when I decided to just take a little step. For me, that was taking a class that talked about quitting sugar. I knew that sugar was a good starting point because I'd been on a sugar bender since Christmas (and this was now February). That one step led me to understand how to cut back on sugar and eventually tame that gnarly beast. The next step was hiring a health coach.
With sugar under control and a little bit of weight loss under my belt (no pun intended), I felt energized to continue taking more steps. Working with a health coach paid off. I got clarity on how to continue to lose weight and get healthier, how to shop, what my fridge and pantry should look like and how to actually cook something more than throwing pasta in water and pouring a jar of sauce in a pot. I really never thought I'd see the day when I felt confident in the kitchen, enjoyed preparing nutritious meals and got compliments on my cooking. My coach showed me how to do all of this without me feeling overwhelmed in the end. I also recognized that I was already doing some things right and maybe just needed a couple of tweaks to make them more effective. It helped to take away the ambiguity and analysis paralysis that comes from too much information. I got clarity that translated my aspirations (get healthy and fit, bump up my energy and fit back into MY own skinny jeans) into specific action steps and I was on my way! I got the support from health coaching that helped me build lasting, healthy habits that keep me in my Skinny Jeans.
Today, I really do wear Skinny Jeans and Skinny Shorts and sometimes I even wear a Skinny LBD. I lost 27 pounds/12 kilos (that translated to 18% of my body weight). I now feel energized throughout the day and as a bonus my health issues are barely a blip on the screen. My doctors tell me my blood work looks fantastic and to keep on doing what I'm doing. Of course, they told me in that vague way to "change my diet” before but they didn't have the time or wherewithal to tell me how to do it and that's where health coaching came in for me. It was the missing ingredient that completely transformed my body and health and well-being. I found myself becoming the “go to” person on healthy eating and lifestyle with family and friends. Some of my friends and family followed many of the same principles as I did and they experienced phenomenal results such as losing weight, escaping insulin, taking less pain medicine, etc.
I've seen the power of health coaching work for my loved ones and me. Working with a health coach and getting such great results inspired me to become one myself.
